Detail of miniature from the Compendium of Chronicles by Rashid al-Din. Shows three cavalry soldiers pursued by their enemy, also on horseback. The third horseman has turned towards his pursuer, holding his hands up in either surrender or appeasement. Scene is said to portray Tughan Khan, ruler of Bengal throughout the mid-13th century, putting heathen invaders to flight. Khan can be seen in the centre of the image, on a brown horse, with his mace raised.
